Our guest speaker this week is Richard Striner, a writer, scholar, and activist. Richard led an historic preservation organization before joining the faculty of Washington College, where he served as professor of history for thirty years. He also served as senior writer for the Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial Commission. His presentation is entitled, “Ike in Love and War.”

The author of over a dozen books, he is also the author of numerous magazine and journal articles along with public affairs commentaries and op-eds.

An independent, he encourages people to “think outside the box.”  His writing has covered political history, presidential history, literature, economics, film, architecture, and historic preservation.

His most recent book is Summoned to Glory: The Audacious Life of Abraham Lincoln (Rowman & Littlefield, 2020).  Previous presidential books include Woodrow Wilson and World War I: A Burden Too Great to Bear (Rowman & Littlefield, 2014), Lincoln and Race (Southern Illinois Univerity Press, 2012), Lincoln’s Way: How Six Great Presidents Created American Power (Rowman & Littlefield, 2010), and Father Abraham: Lincoln’s Relentless Struggle to End Slavery (Oxford University Press, 2006). He contributed to the online New York Times “Disunion” series on the Civil War, and he has written two cover stories for the American Scholar magazine. He has also written articles for William & Mary Quarterly and Aspen Institute Quarterly. He was a regular book reviewer for The Weekly Standard.

Our guest speaker this week is Shirley Hu, presenting “End Forced Organ Harvesting-Another Form of Human Trafficking.” She was born and raised in Taiwan and treasures her Chinese cultural heritage. Shirley has been a proud American citizen for over 40 years.

Shirley is a full-time volunteer supporting multiple non-profit organizations after retiring from her Information Technology development and management career.  She has been a Rotarian for over 10 years and is a Major Donor Level 4 with the Rotary Foundation, focusing on Peace & Conflict Resolution to combat human trafficking.

Shirley is the current chair of Ending Forced Organ Harvesting Rotary Satellite Club of CAAHT (Community Action Against Human Trafficking). She also serves as one of the North America coordinators for RAGAS (Rotary Action Group Against Modern Slavery).  And most recently, she is a granny on call!

Our Rotary Club of Washington, DC’s March 13, 2024, program will be organized and produced by the first Rotaract Club our Rotary club sponsored. The Rotaract Club of Washington, D.C. was founded in May 1994–30 years and counting, and is led this Rotary year by Ahmed Eltally, President the Club and an Emerging Leader in District 7620.

The club is a part of a global effort to bring peace and international understanding to the world.  Their effort starts at the community level but knows no limits in its outreach. Rotary International provides the administrative support that helps the Rotaract club thrive, and they’re also funded by our Club and its foundation,
the Rotary Foundation of Washington, D.C.

Professionally, Ahmed is an international diplomacy professional and conflict resolution practitioner who works at the intersection of business, development, security, and diplomacy. Ahmed started his career as a civil engineer designing and managing infrastructure projects, then he decided to shift his career to studying international conflict resolution. Ahmed used to design concrete bridges, and he is now designing bridges of peace and understanding.

Ahmed is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP), certified Risk Management Professional (PMI-RMP), and Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP), and he earned graduate degrees in Conflict Resolution and Peace Studies, Public Administration, Teaching University Students, and Nonprofit and Public management from Portland State University, where he taught classes about the Middle East policy and leading social change, led new initiatives, and received the UNST scholarship, the Presidential Award for Excellence, and the Department Award for Excellence, and some research grants to conduct research abroad.
