We have an opportunity to work with Reading Partners of Washington, D.C. to provide virtual reading tutoring services to students starting in autumn 2021. Reading Partners is a national nonprofit organization that assists communities to provide students with individualized reading support that they need to read at grade level by fourth grade.

Hi everyone!! It’s Michelle Ems, Dictionary Project Chair. COVID-19 has disrupted our lives over the past year. Due to the impact of this virus, the D.C. Rotary Club could not deliver dictionaries to the third graders of the D.C. public schools. We do not know when we will be able to restart this project. In the meantime, we have an opportunity to work with Reading Partners of Washington, D.C. to provide virtual reading tutoring services to students starting in autumn 2021. Reading Partners is a national nonprofit organization that assists communities to provide students with individualized reading support that they need to read at grade level by fourth grade. Over the past year, students have lost months of learning, setting them even further behind. And in 2019, even before COVID-19, 70 percent of District of Columbia fourth graders were reading below grade level. We must take action now to improve these numbers!!

Reading Partners of Washington, D.C. serves students in kindergarten through fourth grade, and it will provide lesson plans to all volunteer tutors. Reading Partners requires its volunteers to attend two 2-hour orientation sessions, undergo a background check, and commit to at least one 1-hour tutoring session each week. Volunteers must be available Monday through Thursday between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Eastern. Please consider participating in this rewarding experience and making a difference in the lives of Washington, D.C.’s youth.
