By: Russ SavageClub Member Lynn Holec shares her story.
I am an economist and attorney. I arrived in DC from the Midwest in 1973 after graduate school. After 10 years with the Federal Government and four with the law firm Dewey Ballantine, I started a management consulting firm that focused on international trade litigation. We handled subsidy and price discrimination cases involving a wide range of industries such as live swine, mussels, steel, pasta and large civil aircraft from various countries including Japan, Canada, Mexico, Norway, France and Germany. I sold the firm in 2014 and retired shortly thereafter.
I joined the DC Rotary Club in October 2007 primarily to meet new, interesting people. Certainly, that goal has been achieved and exceeded. I love the diversity and the dedication to service of the Club members. Besides that, they are genuinely nice people.
I joined the Club’s Community Service Grants Committee where I became better acquainted with my fellow Club members and was able to assist in reviewing grant applications and making funding recommendations. We are privileged to have our own Club Foundation that annually provides about $180,000 to DC non-profits through the CSG Committee in addition to providing about $80,000 to the Boys Club Girls Club; purchasing trees for DC parks; providing support to various youth programs including a Career Fair, etc.
David Klaus, a mentor, appointed me to be the Club secretary during his presidency, which got me involved in the Club administration. Since then, I have served on the Club’s Board, as Club treasurer and have been honored to serve as the Club’s president. Another mentor, Jay Pugh, encouraged me to go to the Rotary International Convention and to join the Rotary wine club. These activities were immensely rewarding. I have also attended District conferences and taken all three RLI courses.
There is a lot to learn about Rotary’s local and international activities and I am still a novice. My hobbies, besides Rotary, include hiking, reading and theater.Read More
