By: Russ SavageClub Member Bob Johnson shares his story.
It was a wonderful childhood in South Florida… “free range” kids, riding bikes to the then-deserted beaches.
A 22-year Army career included tours in Germany, Vietnam, Korea, Belgium, Kansas, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Virginia, and California. Retired as a Lieutenant Colonel at the Presidio of San Francisco.
Second career was in geriatric housing and health care… came to like old people so much that I became one.
Education included bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Florida State, graduation from the FBI National Academy, and a doctorate from the University of Georgia.
First Rotary Club was San Francisco Two, joined in 1987.
Joined the Rotary Club of Central Marin, California, in 1990… served as president… and was active in the International Fellowship of Motorcycling Rotarians.
Left California and moved to DC in 2008. Joined this Rotary club… chaired the Dictionary project and participated in fund-raisers.
Three years later, Beverly and I got rid of nearly all of our possessions. Traveled full-time, with no home, and only a rolling suitcase and backpack apiece… for the next six years.
Six Continents, 70+ countries.
And the marriage survived.
Beverly and I have now been married for 51 years… with four grown children and six grandchildren.
In 2017, four years ago, it was time to settle down. Bought a condo in Arlington. As a military retiree, chose Arlington, in part, so we’d never have to move again. Ever.
Joined this club for the second time.
It’s been a privilege to visit Rotary Clubs throughout the world… and see the Rotary emblem proudly displayed everywhere… in large cities and in small, remote villages… at meeting places and on Rotary sponsored projects.
Rotary is a mighty force for peace in the world.
It is an honor to be your fellow Rotarian.
Thank you.Read More
