Trees for the Capital

Wednesday, December 25, 2019 By: Lisa McCurdy
At each weekly meeting, our speaker is presented with a certificate indicating that the DC Rotary Club plants trees several times a year honoring our speakers. Named the Peter Gilsey Trees for the Capital in honor of long-standing DC Rotary Club member, Peter Gilsey, this program has resulted in more than 300 trees being planted, around the Tidal Basin, although a few trees have been planted elsewhere (e.g., near the White House and the Capitol), and at Farragut Square. Though funded by our Rotary Foundation of Washington, D.C., the choice of tree and actual planting is conducted by the experts at the National Park Service.

Thank you to the DC Rotary Club guest speakers, Rotarians, and members of the National Park Service who braved the cold at our Club’s tree planting ceremony on Wednesday, November 13th . We don’t usually put our speakers to work planting the tree commemorating their presentation to our Club, but all seemed to enjoy participating Wednesday morning!
