By: Filippa Lynn HolecRachel Greenberg from the Shakespeare Theater Company gives her thanks to the Rotary Club of Washington, D.C., for our grant.
On behalf of all my colleagues at the Shakespeare Theatre Company (STC), I want to thank you and the DC Rotary Foundation for your recent grant in support of the District Shakespeare program. Especially at this challenging time, we are so grateful for the support we receive from the DC community, and this grant will help fund one of the Theatre’s most seminal programs and beloved traditions.
Though the 2019-20 program had to be suspended early due to COVID-19, STC was able to offer the District Shakespeare program to 1,729 DC students over the season, which included free tickets to see four of our mainstage productions: Everybody, Peter Pan and Wendy, The Amen Corner, and Timon of Athens. Students also had the chance to interact with the cast of these productions in a post-performance “talkback,” often cited by teachers as a “highlight” of the field trip experience. The program also provided free transportation to and from the theatre, in-school workshops to introduce students to the production, and professional development opportunities to teachers.
For many students, District Shakespeare is their first experience of live, professional theatre, and STC could not offer this program without the support of organizations like yours. Thanks again to you and your colleagues at the DC Rotary Foundation for your generosity, and I hope you are all staying healthy and well as we all wait for more of a return to normalcy.
Best regards,
RACHEL GREENBERG
Director of Foundation and Government Relations
